Announcing a 3-day Current Topics in Plant Identification Course at the Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. The course emphasizes the dominant plant species found in wetlands, adjacent uplands, and the transition zone between the two. Course includes information on invasive plant species, new invaders and old nemeses, and infestation ecology. Most of the course time is spent in the field seeing, discussing, and identifying plants. Field sites include a variety of habitat types in the coastal area. To enhance the experience at each site, participants receive a list of dominant species expected at field sites. CLASS SIZE IS STRICTLY LIMITED, so take advantage of this opportunity to enhance your knowledge of coastal flora.
Participants should have a working knowledge of general botany and plant terminology. Participants should bring hand lens and other tools of the trade for use in the field. Course material includes a notebook of training information. Participants are encouraged to bring with them plant guides/manuals with which they are familiar.
Since the majority of class time will be in the field, participants need to be prepared to be outdoors. Only severe weather will keep the class from getting into the field. Bring gear for a variety of weather conditions just in case. Remember sunscreen and bug repellant. Contact Mike Shelton (251-490-8968) for more information about content and additional information.
